Hello everyone! Day 2 at MTCW was absolutely insane! The day started off with a nice, healthy breakfast and was then followed by a fairly lengthy process of getting our hair and makeup done. We then had our individual photo shoots, video interviews and finally our personal interviews. What an experience!

Then, later on in the evening, we attended Mentor Night-a live blogging exercise where we had the opportunity and privilege of listening to four female mentors and their stories.

Dr Archer

The night began with host and guest speaker Dr. Archer, who is a dynamic Toronto dentist and began her dental career in 2001.

Believe it or not, but she has managed to have a career and a family while building a profession as a hospital dentist!

During her speech, Dr. Archer stressed upon the importance of education and emphasized that it is THE most important thing because no one can ever take it away from you and that’s something that will personally stick with me for a lifetime. Dr. Archer also mentioned that women, especially business women, need to begin taking calculated business risks. In fact, “we as women are true business leaders”, she said. Take Greengage mobile for instance, a successful company with an all women’s executive team. Not only are we smart risk takers now but, there is seen to be an increasingly large number of women breadwinners. That being said, it can be quite hard to maintain relationships with spouses, family and friends, she said. Additionally, with women pursuing their careers, the issue of when to settle down and have kids also arrises. In sum, Dr. Archer is definitely passionate about giving back and delivering realistic messages to her audiences and her insight was greatly appreciated from my end!

Dr. Archer and I after Mentor Night

Melani ChongMelani Chong in fashion and beauty for over 15 years, Canadian Ford Model and mom of two children. She also recently developed a personalized skin care line called Soya Boutique! These organic products are a natural skin care collection that is useful for the whole family.

During her speech, I came to learn that she was initially only interested in sports but when brought to the mall by her father, she was scouted by Ford Models. Chong emphasized that although modelling was a great experience, she felt like she could do more! She told us to never forget that there will be opportunities that grow from experiences. She also stressed that being a beautiful women, it’s not always easy to be taken seriously and that it is therefore important to always communicate and to always ask questions to clear up any and all uncertainties. While ending, she quoted Socrates and said, “Wisest is he who knows what he does not know” and she couldn’t have said it better in my opinion!

katrina haddenNext up was Katrina Hadden, a health and wellness specialist, size 12 model, life coach, motivational speaker and the author of the best-selling self-help book, Making It In High Heels.

Known for her positive energy and contagious smile, she helps her clients get better focused to achieve their goals and dreams . Katrina Hadden Life Coaching for Athletes has been a life coach for over eight years, specializing in Stress Management, Personal Development, Work-Life Balance and Health and Wellness.

Through her speech I came to learn that she was in fact bullied as a child for her size. In her teens, she was a competitive basketball player and actually played the position of post like me! Unfortunately, after receiving a terrible knee injury, Hadden had to then create a new dream – a new chapter in her life. Once into modelling, it was her dream to develop a market for size 12 models and boy did she ever! She got to walk in Toronto Fashion Week as the only size 12 model and managed to get a standing ovation when walking out onto the runway (quite the accomplishment don’t you think?).

Here are some tips Katrina suggested in order to become a good role model;

1. Take care of your body and health (workout, eat right, maintain a regime)
2. Find an interest or hobby (be it running, writing, playing an instrument)
3. Carry an attitude of gratitude (be polite to others always thanking them)
4. Forgiveness (because life is just too short)

Katrina Hadden and I!

Alexandra Orlanmdo, Olympic athlete

Our last speaker was, Alexandra Orlando, a highly decorated world-class Rhythmic Gymnast. Her wisdom can be found inside the pages of an award winning book called In Pursuit of Victory.

Alexandra has in fact also just published her second motivational book, Breaking Through My Limits: An Olympian Uncovered!

During her speech, Orlando mentioned that teenage years are really the years to determine what you want to do with yourself. For someone who’s a speaker, she mentioned that she’s a rather private person, something I can personally sometimes relate to. In 2003, when she didn’t qualify for the Olympics, she reached rock bottom and said she had, in a way, lost her identity. She was actually even criticized for being too big and heavy. However, in 2008, things took a turn for the better when she finally qualified for the olympics! She ended by stating, “One cannot be scared of failing because then you will always have regrets”, take every opportunity you get and have fun!

Alexandra Orlando and I!

A special thanks to all the inspiring women, Rob Campbell and MTCW for planning, organizing and executing such an exciting and moving event!

Hit reality T.V. show So You Think You Can Act is the year’s biggest televised acting competition, taking viewers into the world of drama and quite frankly; flat out competition! Join host Megha Sandhu as she introduces some of Canada’s most hopeful actors as they compete for an acting contract with one of Canada’s most prestigious acting agencies. Judges Susan Sarandon, Richard Gere, Kiefer Sutherland and a surprise guest judge will have sole control over who’s crowned the So You Think You Can Act champion.

The show features a tiered format where auditions are held all across Canada’s major cities. Hopeful contestants of all ages will be asked to perform a solo skit of their choice, be it a  comedy, a drama and from any time period. If allowed to move forward, hopefuls are then put through another round of auditions to test their ability to adapt to different styles of acting. At the end of this process, a small number of actors (20) are chosen as finalists to be featured on the show. These actors move on the competition’s main phase, where each week, they have 5 days to train and rehearse a pre-selected short play. Day 6 is show day, where all actors perform the pre-selected play in front of the judges, a live audience and to the rest of Canada. Actors compete for the votes of the broadcast viewing audience which, combined with the input of the panel of judges, determines which actors advance to the next stage from week to week.

So You Think You Can Act will reach audience members from all across Canada and the USA. Whether you’re a hopeful actor yourself or just love the art, this is the show for you! The long rehearsal hours and behind the scenes footage will surely attract anyone’s attention!

We are honoured to have the TORONTO ACADEMY OF ACTING FOR FILM & TELEVISION and MAC Cosmetics as our official sponsors! The Toronto Academy of Acting School has some of the finest acting teachers who work in the film & television industry as seasoned professional Actors or Film & Television Directors. It it for this reason that the TAA and So You Think You Can Act make great partners!

We are equally as glad to be having Mac Cosmetics as the primary providers for our stage makeup. Stage makeup is as much a science as it is an art, requiring precision, practice, and a considerable amount of trial and error.  It’s also something any good performer needs to learn, as it’s not only a way to enhance your looks or charisma onstage, but a valuable way to help you build or solidify your characters. It is for this reason that Mac products are trusted 100%!

The hour long So You Think You Can Act runs once weekly on CTV!
Hope you all tune in to watch!

With tourism having increasingly destrimental affects on a country’s natural resources and on communities of the destinations visited, there is certainly a great need for more ethical tourism options.

The quality of the environment, both natural and made-made, is essential to tourism. However, tourism’s relationship with the environment is complex, many activities can have adverse environmental effects. Many of these impacts are linked with the construction of general infrastructures such as roads and airports  and of tourism facilities such as hotels, restaurants, shops, golf courses and marinas.

The negative impacts of tourism development can gradually destroy the environment resources on which it depends. Negative impacts from tourism occur when the level of visitor use is greater than the environment’s ability to cope with this use within the acceptable limits of change (“The International Ecotourism Society”). However, tourism has the potential to create beneficial effects on the environment by contributing to environmental protection and conservation.

Ecotourism is a way to raise awareness of environmental values and it can serve as a tool to finance the protection of natural areas and increase their economic importance.

That being said, the first destination I’d love to visit with my two best friends is, Thailand. From what I hear, Ecotourism is currently a buzzword in the Thai tourism scene!

First, I’d like to go camping in Thailand’s national parks with my best friends. Did you know that camping was a popular activity among Thai school students as well as foreign backpackers to Thailand long before the buzz word ‘ecotourism’ came into existence? That’s because it is the cheapest accommodation to be found. Admittedly not as comfortable as staying in a hotel, resort or guest house, I think camping is simple, easy and gets you much closer to nature than would otherwise be possible.

After having camped out along the breathtakingly beautiful ocean, my best friends and I would go on a mountain climbing expedition in Ao Railey in Krabi, Thailand.

Next stop, off to scuba diving! Did you know that during the past 5-6 years, scuba diving has rapidly emerged as one of the most popular eco activities in this region?  I learnt that, apart from the rewarding beauty, diving in Thailand is very economical! The average four-day, full certification course costs around 6,000 – 8,000 baht including all instruction, equipment and several open-water dives. That works out to about 160 – 200 Canadian dollars!

Then we’d visit Mae Hong Son, the capital of Thailand’s northwestern-most province! Visitors come here for the unusual and beautiful natural scenery, the mountain trekking and to see the local hill tribe communities – one of which is the famous Karen long neck tribe!

Lastly, why not plan a day trip to Bangkok?! Here, we’d visit the impossibly bejewelled Grand Palace and if time permits, take a trip to Wat Arun, one of the oldest and best known landmarks in Bangkok and Wat Po which is home to a huge reclining Buddha!

Grand Palace Bangkok, Thailand (Global Grasshopper)

In all, visiting Thailand with my best friends would be an amazing experience! Being able to travel in a responsible manner to natural areas that conserves the environment, all while trying to improve the well-being of local people…WHAT MORE COULD I ASK FOR?! :D

My friends and I would love knowing that the way in which we’re traveling benefits the local population. That being said, ecotourism can definitely be fun – if not more fun that classical touring! Having a very hectic and demanding college schedule, we girls can often be under a lot of stress and pressure during the academic year. This trip would be the perfect opportunity to get involved and get active, all while learning so many new things and broadening our worldly knowledge!

Till next time!

Love,

Megha xo

July 1st, Canada Day – a day of celebration, fireworks and festivities here in Montreal but how did it all begin? Why does this day even exist? Who chose for July 1st to be THE DAY and what happened on this day many years ago?

Here, I decided to decode this holiday and find out the true reason for it’s existence.

First off, Canada wasn’t actually “born” on July 1st but the holiday celebrates the events that took place on this day. It turns out that, on July 1, 1867, the British North American Act created the Canadian federal government. This act basically stated that Canada would become an independant dominion (territory) of England, which is why Canada Day was originally called Dominion Day.

More specifically, on that day, three British colonies were formed into four Canadian provinces. The British Province of Canada was divided into the new Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and two other British colonies, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, also became provinces of Canada.

I also learnt that it was only in 1982, that the term Dominion Day changed to Canada Day after a vote in Parliament. However, not everyone was happy about this change. Some people felt that a 115-year-old part of Canadian heritage was lost. But, the new name stuck and every July 1, Canadians celebrate Canada Day with parades, fireworks, picnics and food! :)

Additionally, the Fathers of Confederation are basically the people who attended the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences in 1864 and the London Conference of 1866 in England, preceding Canadian Confederation.

Fathers of Confederation, 1864. This famous photo shows John A. Macdonald seated in the front row, centre, George-Étienne Cartier is standing to his right.

On a less nerdy note, this Canada Day was extremely fun and memorable because I got to participate in the Canada Day Parade! So, the day began when I arrived two hours prior to the parade to greet as many participants as I could and discuss a run through of the parade. Here are a few pics prior to the parade;

I’d like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting me on the day of the parade. I never expected so many smiling faces and so much cheering!

Stay tuned for more updates on my preparation! 10 days left ahh!!

Hi everyone! So after a long two days of shooting and editing, I’m finally done both my Skyline and my Look Good, Do Good, Feel Good Video Challenges!

My Skyline shooting began in the morning where I was met with a party of tourists from all around the world. The video was shot from Mount Royal, a lookout that acts as a natural landmark and way to orient yourself here in Montreal. The lookout also rewards those who make their way to the summit with a wonderful view of the city. In fact, the Mont Royal summit has a lookout and park that were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his work on Central Park in NYC. Here are some behind the scenes shots from my Skyline video challenge;

Lookout- Mount Royal

Check out my skyline video and feel free to click on the heart next to the title, if you liked the video :)

The next day I visited Angrion Park where I conducted a shoreline cleanup at a local pond for the Aveda Institute Professional Hair and Make-up School in Canada Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good Video Challenge. Given the opportunity to express my unique personality, I chose to lessen the pollution at this local pond as the environment and environmental awareness is something I’m quite passionate about. Ponds often provide oxygen, food and shelter for a variety of plant and animal life. However, the water in a pond must be kept clean if it is to remain a sustainable habitat for these organisms. The most noticeable pollution in ponds is the accumulation of garbage that has been dumped by humans. Anything from cans and food wrappers to rusted bicycles and old hubcaps can contribute to the pollution of a pond. This type of thoughtless human behavior not only makes the environment repulsive to look at, but it also destroys a lot of pond life. Have a look around your neighbourhood to see if you can find any wild ponds in need of a cleanup. Remember, Look Good, Do Good, Feel Good  and help our environment! Here are a few behind the scenes pics from the day;

Stay tuned for a Canada Day blog post!

Hello everyone! So I’m back from India and to be honest, I’m experiencing mixed emotions . On the one hand, I’m trilled to be back in Canada but also super sad to have to have left behind all the amazing memories I shared with family and friends back in India. Nonetheless, it’s time to move forward and run full swing into Miss Teen Canada-World 2012 preparation! So here’s an overview of my journey!

Upon landing in New Delhi, India, I began with a road trip to Amritsar – a city in the state of Punjab in northwestern India, which also happens to be the centre of the Sikh faith and of the Golden Temple.

The first thing which struck me while driving on Indian roads was just how many people there were! People honking left and right, motorcycles coming just inches from your car – it was definitely an experience!

Road view - Amritsar, Punjab

A cow on a road divider!

And of course, what would a road trip be without delicious Indian ‘Dhaba’ (road-side restaurants) food?! Here’s a pic I snapped of my meal I had at a Punjabi Dhaba restaurant called Haveli. This particular dish is called Chole Bhature, a combination of chole (spicy chick peas) and bread called bhatoora.

Chole Bhature dish at Haveli

After having reached Amritsar, I visited the Golden Temple, a very prominent Sikh Gurudwara, whose construction was completed in 1604.

Once my visit to Amritsar was over, I stopped off in Chandigarh where I visited Chandigarh Accountancy Solutions-one of my main sponsors for the pageant. I’d like to really thank the staff for their generosity and warm welcome.

Staff members and I at my sponsors office; Chandigarh Accountancy Solutions

Next stop was Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh a state in central India. There, I visited a local orphanage called Shri Rajkumaribai Bal Niketan, where I met and interacted with the children during their meal time. I came to learn that most of the children were girls who had been abandoned by their parents at a very young age. In fact, the orphanage lovingly adopted these children and ensured that they learnt a trade for their future endeavours and even took the responsibility for arranging their marriages; so much so that the girls were asked to visit the orphanage twice a year after their marriage to ensure that they were leading happy lives.

That same night, I visited the Gwari Ghat on the banks of river Narmada. The Gurudwara is located on the mountaintop and the temple of Godess Narmada is in the center of the Narmada river. In India, rivers hold a very important position. They are worshipped as the source of life, they give birth, sustain life and when people die, their ashes are submerged back into the holy waters to be distributed to the seven seas.

Gwari Ghat with Gurudwara on the left and temple of Goddess Narmada on the right

Girl offering prayers to Goddess Narmada. Lighted lamps (diyas) are then allowed to drift on water, signifying wishes and prayers

The next day, I made a visit to Jabalpur’s Narmada River valley, famous for it’s marble rocks. The valley is essentially a unique formation where the whole river flows for nearly 2 kilometers between varied coloured and tinted marble rocks.

Marble Rocks, Narmada River, Jabalpur

Generations of sculptors have been carving beautiful statues from these marble rocks

I then payed a visit to the Women’s Home Science College in Jabalpur. There, I had the pleasure of speaking to young teenage girls studying Fashion Design, about my title; Miss Teen Quebec World 2012 and how I got involved in the competition. They were all very curious to know how I did it and if I am nervous for the national pageant. While there, I tried to motivate the girls and stressed the importance of a balanced lifestyle. One can be a good student and know how to have fun as well!

Talking to the girls at the Home Science College, Jabalpur

While there, I also demonstrated how to walk the runway

That same day, I had an interview with the Indian media; Dainik Bhaskar, a local newspaper in Madhya Pradesh. They asked me questions related to my title and why I was visiting Jabalpur. I explained that this is the place where my dad is from and that I had come to visit family and give back to the community as best I could. What was funny was that I appeared on TV the same night, only a few hours after they had interviewed me! Here’s a link to a mobile video I recorded from the TV (sorry for horrible video quality)!

Jabalpur-Miss Teen Quebec

Once my visit to Jabalpur was over, I stopped off in the country’s capital; New Delhi. Here, I visited a number of sites including; Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas Village.

Humayun's Tomb - Humayun was the second Mughal Emperor who ruled present day Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of northern India from 1530–1540 and again from 1555–1556.

Qutub Minar - Qutub Minar in red and buff sandstone is the highest tower in India

Hauz Khas-it was established by the emperor Alauddin Khilji in the year 1284. The emperor commissioned a very large pond in this area for the use of the inhabitants of Siri Fort, the second city of Delhi.

What would any trip to India be without having visited the Taj Mahal?! Here’s a pic I was able to capture in the scorching heat;

Taj Mahal - Agra, India

In the end, I made a short visit to an ISKCON Temple in Vrindaban, where devotees of Lord Krishna from all around the world take shelter.

Morning prayers being offered at the ISKCON Temple, 4:00 a.m.

Devotees waiting for a "Darshan" (sight) of Lord Krishna

In all, I can say that India was truly an eye opening experience which I will cherish for a life time! Stay tuned for more blogs on my preparation for Toronto!

Love,

Megha xo

Hi everyone! I’m currently in the UK (Nottingham to be precise)!
Yesterday, I took a tube trip down to central London where I was finally able to see the much anticipated (for me at least) National Portrait Gallery, which I had been wanting to see for the longest time.

London’s National Portrait Gallery, in my opinion, houses one of the greatest collections of Western European portrait paintings in the world.

Being a Tudor fanatic, I was so excited to be able to see their collection of paintings of England’s two strongest monarchs; King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

For a bit of insight, The Tudors were a Welsh-English family that ruled England and Wales from 1485 to 1603 (in my opinion, one of the most exciting periods of British history). In brief, they ruled for 118 years and during their reign encouraged new religious ideas, overseas explorations and colonization.

Here’s a pic I was able to snap of Queen Elizabeth I, while at the Tudor exhibition:

In fact, the National Portrait Gallery currently has “The Queen Art & Image” exhibition going on, marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Essentially, the exhibition brings together over fifty-five of the most remarkable and resonant images of Elizabeth II made during her reign.

Queen Elizabeth II by Dorothy Wilding, 1952

Tickets are normally £ 6.00 and £ 5.50 for senior citizens. Check out “The Queen Art & Image” link above for further details on the National Portrait Gallery website.

Apart from my trip to London, I have been enjoying the beautiful scenic views from the countryside here in Nottingham.

I actually, just received an email confirming my spot in the annual Canada Day parade in Montreal! I come back home on June 20th and cannot wait for this event!

It’s currently evening time here in Nottingham and I’m being called down to eat!

Bye for now!
Love,
